YOUNG IMAGINATIONS SOAR THE UN GREEN DAY

DEIDRA ROBERTS, WHO

The children put their hearts and minds into absorbing the fresh air and enjoying entertaining events at the UN’s celebration of World Environment Day 2010.
‘Conservation is everyone’s responsibility’ was the focus of many programmes that encouraged active participation as the key to saving the planet.

Ranging in age from pre-school to young adults, the young visitors strolled among the various tents and stands, learning that consuming less energy will preserve natural resources. A huge range of fun activities in the superb natural setting of Parc de l’Ariana provided the perfect inducement to teach children that conservation is necessary to ensure such natural places endure.

While the parents visited the UN Special tent to browse through copies of the magazine, children wrote down their comments about their experience at the UN’s “Green Day”:
“My parents remind me to turn off lights and the TV when I’m not watching it. That saves energy,” said Donald.
“I think saving the earth is a good thing for the future,” offered Josie.
“We buy food that is not in expensive packaging.” “Yes, it’s very interesting here,” agreed Yasmina.
“I loved it because I danced and did face painting,” said Sneha.
“It was a lovely day, beamed Sasma.
“I had a super time in the Parc de l’Ariana.” “I love being here,” Kylie, said, adding he will write something at school about his Green Day experience.
