Haïti : histoire d’une île devenue indépendante trop tôt, histoire du prix à payer pour un pays, histoire d’un esclavage brutal, de l’indépendance et de Toussaint Louverture qui fut son leader et qui mourut au Fort de Joux dans le Jura, histoire d’une diaspora oubliée.

Peuple libre, noir et éduqué, dans un monde encore colonial tirant à sa fin, les haïtiens ont fait partie des premières personnes de couleur à être embauchées par le système des Nations Unies en 1960. Massivement recrutés par l’OMS, les haïtiens participent brillamment au redressement de la crise du Congo belge.

Les dictatures successives ont provoqué le départ de presque tous les intellectuels haïtiens, à la ruine du pays et à l’écrasement de toutes les strates sociales. De symbole dans la Caraïbe, Haïti est devenue un pays du quart-monde. A qui la faute ?

Et puis le séisme. Avez-vous vu cette fillette haïtienne mourant sous les décombres filmée par une caméra indécente et honteuse ? Même dame télévision aura eu raison d’Hispaniola. Aidons Haïti à se rétablir mais donnons-lui surtout les moyens de décider elle-même d’une reconstruction durable.

Haiti: the story of an island which became independent too soon. Genesis of the price to pay to have a free country. A history of brutal slavery and then independence thanks to its leader Toussaint Louverture who died here at the Fort de Joux in the Jura mountains. History of a forgotten diaspora.

A free nation of black and educated people in an agonizing colonial world, Haitians were amongst the first people of colour to be hired by the United Nations in 1960. Massively recruited by WHO, they made a landmark contribution during the Belgian-Congo crisis.

Repeated dictatorships forced most of Haitian intellectuals into exile which led the country to financial ruin and the social structure to collapse. From a model example in the Caribbean, Haiti became the country of the fourth-world. Who is to blame?

And then the earthquake. Did you see the little Haitian girl dying under the rubble, filmed by an intrusive and inglorious camera? Even the righteous Lady television has given the finish straw to Hispaniola. Let us help Haiti rise, while giving her the means to decide on her own durable reconstruction.
