RÊVE D’ETHIOPIE

L’Ethiopie a souvent été présente dans les colonnes
de notre magazine, grâce notamment
à notre collègue et amie Seble Demeke, correspondante
pour l’Afrique d’UN Special. Jo Butler (CNUCED) met également en place
tous les ans, un fonds d’aide. Nous maintenons
donc un contact privilégié avec ce pays,
au point même d’y avoir consacré un magazine

Le passage en ce froid d’hiver, d’un équipage
surprenant et coloré, devant le portail de Pregny,
à l’entrée du Palais, attira mon attention.
Renseignements pris (sécurité oblige), il
s’agissait d’un jeune éthiopien juché sur un
vélo décoré aux couleurs de sa patrie.
Girmay Mesfin est un ambassadeur sportif, dont l’ambition est de faire découvrir son pays afin d’en vanter la culture et la beauté. Il débuté son tour de l’Europe à Paris et rêve même de poursuivre son périple sur d’autres continents. Il traverse les paysages, modestement, à la vitesse qui permet les rencontres ou chaque arrêt, chaque dialogue, ne sont pas forcément programmés. Le jeune homme a trouvé, avec sa bicyclette, le support qui lui convient. Il tente de véhiculer une image positive dynamique et joyeuse de son pays, en abolissant les clichés réducteurs assimilant Ethiopie à famine et à pauvreté.

ETHIOPIA, MY COUNTRY

Ethiopia is the oldest only independent country in Africa, with one of the longest recorded histories in the world. Land of many wonders, origin of human kind, coffee plant, eight world heritage sites which are recognized by UNESCO. But it is just because of same reasons and of course disproportionate foreign media coverage out of the country poverty, often the world associates Ethiopia only with famine and war. This makes it hard for the country to develop its own rich tourism potential and attract foreign investors. As a concerned citizen knowing and understanding about Ethiopia I have felt not to let the world continue and understand only that image so in a way I decided to create the opportunity for the rest of the world, to discover about the amazing history, incredible nature and beautiful culture of Ethiopia for social and economic mutual benefit. This is how I came up with the idea of organizing a cross country bicycle tour all over Europe (I have done so far around 5000 km in France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Switzerland and I am planning to continue to Canada, Australia, America, Japan etc... I strongly believe that this promotional bicycle tour could make a difference on the country’s bad image and increase tourist arrival to Ethiopia in order to boost revenue income from the tourism sector and help the ongoing effort of poverty reduction.
