POURQUOI NE PAS LE FAIRE ?
LES CHEMINS DU PÉNITENCIER DE COTI CHIAVARI (CORSE)

ANDRÉ ROTACH
Depuis Ajaccio, prendre la N193, puis la N156
et la D55. Passer par Porticcio et aller jusqu’à
Verghia. Parking sur la plage, point de départ.
Prendre la D55 direction Ajaccio, passer devant
le restaurant «Chez Emile» et tout de
suite après (600 mètres depuis le départ)
prendre le chemin de terre sur la droite.
Arrivée sur une esplanade, prendre le chemin
du haut à droite. Arrivée au Pénitencier (point
143) en vingt-deux minutes pour 3 km 800 et
145 mètres d’altitude. Continuer sur la gauche
le chemin en épingle et après 300 mètres,
comme repaires, une barrière et un écriteau indiquant «piste forestière de Laticapso»:
Passage au point 375 Laticaspso «Résidence
d’été et autre ruine du pénitencier» et aussi fin
de la montée de 8 km 500 en cinquante minutes
pour un dénivelé de 368 mètres.
Continuer le chemin qui descend nord-est,
piste forestière de Laticapso, laisser sur la
droite la piste forestière de Cortono, puis celle
de Tivarelle et continuer la descente. Passage
par les points 232 et 203 et après 5 km 500 arrivée
à un carrefour (187 mètres) avec deux
possibilités: à gauche la piste forestière de
Bocca di Pozzoli, passage à la fin de la descente
vers une centrale électrique, puis traverser
une superbe forêt de chênes liège et retour au point de départ en une heure vingt et
une pour un total de 18 km 280. A droite de
la piste forestière de Graticella, en passant
dans la forêt des eucalyptus, (superbe également),
puis prendre à gauche à la 1ère bifurcation
et encore à gauche en arrivant sur la
D55 et retour au point de départ par la route.
Durée une heure quarante pour un total de 21
km 810. Les deux forêts de chênes liège et
d’eucalyptus sont magnifiques à voir, donc à
faire. Cet itinéraire peut également se faire à
pied en cinq heures environ.
Le Pénitencier de Coti-Chiavari a été construit
à partir de 1855 et supprimé le 1er juillet 1906
pour manque de rentabilité (sic). La mortalité
pour la seule année 1857 a été de cent dix
pour cinq cent un détenus. Pour certains petits
délits comme le vol, les peines pouvaient
atteindre dix ans de réclusion et pour les militaires
quinze à vingt ans de fers pour insultes
envers un supérieur... Les détenus les
plus jeunes pouvaient avoir seize ans.

THE CHEMINS DU PÉNITENCIER OF COTI CHIAVARI (CORSICA)
I am proposing a few small hikes of varying degrees of difficulty, to let you see new things, get some fresh air and relax a bit. Don’t forget: doing nothing is bad for your health. Here’s hoping you have fun hiking in pleasant and sunny weather.

Starting from Ajaccio, Corsica, take the N193, then the N156 and the D55. Pass by Porticcio and on to Verghia. There is parking on the beach, which is the starting-point. Take the D55 towards Ajaccio, and you pass the Chez Emile restaurant. Right away (600 metres from the start) you take the dirt road on the right. On arriving at an open plaza, take the road heading up on the right. You arrive at Pénitencier (point 143) in twenty-two minutes, about 3.8 km and 145 metres altitude. Continue on the left on the narrow path and, after about 300 metres, you should come across a fence with a sign marked: Piste forestière de Laticapso. You follow along to point 375, Laticapso, marked as a “Résidence d’été et autre ruine du pénitencier” (or, summer residence and prison ruins). This is also the end of the 8.5 km uphill route, lasting fifty minutes for a change in altitude of 368 metres. Continue along the path heading downwards, towards the Northeast, the forest path of Laticapso. You pass by, first, on the right, the forest path of Cortono, then the path to Tivarelle, and continue on downhill. You then pass by points 232 and 203, and after 5.5 km, you arrive at a crossroads (187 metres), which offers you two choices: On the left, there is the forest road of Bocca di Pozzoli. You will pass by, at the end of the downward section, an electric power plant, then a beautiful forest of liege oaks, before returning to the starting-point in one hour twenty-one minutes, for a total 18 km trip. On the right, there is the forest road of Graticella, which passes through an eucalyptus forest, also superb. Then take the left at the first fork in the path, then again to the left at the D55 road, which returns you to the starting point. This trip lasts an hour and forty minutes, for a total of 21.8 km. The two forests, oak and eucalyptus, are magnificent to see, a must-see. This route can also be done on foot in about five hours.
The Pénitencier de Coti-Chiavari was built
starting in 1855 and then levelled on 1 July
1906 as unprofitable (sic). In the year 1857
alone, 110 of its 501 prisoners died. For some
small crimes, such as theft, sentences could
reach ten years, and for soldiers, fifteen to
twenty years hard time for insulting an officer...
The youngest prisoners were just sixteen.
