5320 responses

When UN Special launched this survey it was perhaps only half-heartedly. The relentless attacks against the United Nations, the scandals – real or otherwise – did not bode well for the results. But we believed it was important to go ahead regardless and find out what morale is really like among UN civil servants.
And we were in for a couple of surprises. First, your response was even more overwhelming than last time, in 1995. The flood of electronic surveys circulated by the administration recently did not put you off. Second, morale at the UN is not as low as some would have it.
The first thing we felt, as we were going through all your responses, was a swell of enthusiasm. You do believe in your organization! You want to make a difference; you’re happy and proud to work for the ideals of the United Nations.
Admittedly, the picture isn’t entirely rosy and there’s no denying some of our colleagues are disgruntled. The promotion system, the recruitment process, the management style of some supervisors, they all leave much to be desired.
But the bottom line is that, through your responses, we’ve had the joy of rediscovering an organization that is very much alive, full of ideas and willing to fight to make this world a better place.
