One of my aunts who was always complaining
that her feet, or her legs, or her
back were aching once told me “if after 60
nothing aches, it means that you’re dead!”
Well, dear colleagues, let us cheer up, our
Organization is alive and kicking. And if its
reform, its administration and other places
are aching, it’s a sign of its vitality.
It is true that its 60th anniversary has not
been as glorious as its 50th. However, more
than 100 Heads of States came from all corners
of the world to blow out the candles.
And even if they didn’t take any major decisions,
they were there and that is what really
matters!
The crisis – or rather crises – which we are
passing through right now look much more
like growth pains than a slow death. In a few
weeks, or at most in a few months, the United
Nations will emerge bigger and stronger, even
though it may sound unrealistic right now.
One thing is certain, the violence and the
obsessive stupidity of the attacks against the
Organization are proportional to the narrowness
of the nationalism of its enemies. As for
them, a simple vote will in a few months
sweep them away and relegate their criticisms
to where they belong – the trashcan of
history.
