UN Special No 639 Avril - April 2005

Personnel

Have you ever heard about the Wick’d Angels?

The WHO women’s football team? Of course!

«We're going to Crete to play in the
UN games» I say
«What do you play?» He says
«Football» I say
«Football? Have you ever won a game?» He says
«Yes» I say
«Against a bunch of kids I suppose» he says
«No,» I say, «we lost against them 19-0 but we
have won a game»
«Against who?» He says
«Against the IOM men's team,» I say «they
arrived five minutes late for a game and were
made to forfeit!»
«Oh,» he says «good luck at the games then,
you'll need it!»

«Thanks,» I say, «but you make
your own luck»

Wick'd Angels FCSince those days of defeat things have changed for the Wick’d Angels. No longer are we a rag bag bunch of unfit, illdisciplined losers with two left feet. No, we are on the up! Thanks to our desire to participate in the UN games in Crete in April (no, we don’t just want a suntan!) you will now find us training diligently twice a week with renewed enthusiasm and, more importantly a professional coach, John.
After watching a particularly dismal performance by the Wick’d Angels in the summer of 2004 (in our defence it was the hottest day of the year) John couldn’t bear to see the game he loved played with such ineptitude, and, seeing our enthusiasm wane with every goal that was scored against us he decided to take action — he became our coach. We now know the rules of the game, we know about positioning, we know not to scratch our opponents faces when they come in for a tackle and we know not to go to the pub just before a game (!).
We are ready for the UN games. We have been given our positions, we have our game plan and we are going to ….. well, lose probably but only because we’ll be playing against men. C’mon girls, where are you? Grab your colleagues, make a team and join us in Crete. But, be warned, we will beat you!
If you think you can’t beat us then join us. To do so please contact Nathalie Proust (proustn@who.int)
