Why not do it?

Upstream along the Versoix

André Rotach, UNOG – English translation by David Winch, UNOG

I am proposing a few small hikes of varying degrees of difficulty, to let you see new things, get some fresh air and relax a bit. Don’t forget: doing nothing is bad for your health. Here’s hoping you have days of fun hiking and relaxing in pleasant and sunny weather.

The starting-point is Versoix, in the Parc de la Bécassine; this is on the right at the entry to town, driving from Geneva. At this point, the Versoix River flows into Lake Geneva. To start along the river’s right bank, cross back over the road in Versoix and, continuing under the passageway, take the pathway which hugs the riverbank. Continue under the railway bridge and follow the river along a dirt pathway.

You will reach a wooden footbridge, which you cross. There, you come upon a very nice little canal. After passing under the autoroute, take the road to your left; 100 metres further along, you will meet up again with the path leading back to the Versoix River. The Riche- lieu fish-farm canal will be on your left, and the Versoix on your right. From this point onward, you will not leave the river and forest for several kilometres until reaching the Sauverney customs post.

The time of the hike is about 2 and a half hours, for a total change in altitude of just 94 metres. This excursion can be done with the family, in part or entirely, as it is very easy. It is also possible to continue onwards to Divonne, source of the Versoix River.

An official map from the Swiss hiking federation (Office fédéral de topographie) is indispensable. Don’t forget to wear good hiking boots and weather-suitable clothing.

Good trekking!
