An outstanding heritage

The Palais des Nations is an outstanding heritage site and architectural
complex of the first order requiring continuous and careful maintenance.
In addition to these headline projects, renovations, removals and maintenance
of the building and its technical facilities are going on all over the
Palace. We are aware of the inconvenience that this work can cause (noise,
dust, odours, etc.) and are doing our best to minimize it. If necessary,

Replacement of lift No. 5
Council Building (August - October
2003) The present lift, dating from the 1960s, is in a poor state
of repair and hard to maintain. The new lift is faster, safer, quieter,
and looks smarter. New technology has already been built into the lifts
at doors 40A/40B (in the new wing), 7A/7B or 11 (in the wing AC).
Flooring, eighth-floor restaurant
Council Building (August - 15 September
2003) Following repairs to the kitchens this winter, the fitted
carpet in the dining rooms has been replaced by floor tiles.
Upgrade of the simultaneous interpretation
equipment
Assembly Hall
(July - September
2003)
Recabling and upgrading of the softwares system.
UNOG Beach
(October 2003 - January 2004) The Beach offered a reduced restaurant
service this summer pending the major repair work needed to bring its
facilities fully into line with regulations.
Gate Chemin de fer
(September 2003 - February 2004) This gate has been completely
rethought for a best security. It has been integrated into the project
of the strengthening of Security of the Palais des Nations, which will
be presented in the next issue of the UN Special, as well as in the
news SBST N°2 in October 2003.
about her work
Who is that hiding behind the wall coverings, the drapes and double
curtains, and the armchairs upholstered in fabric or leather? A true
enthusiast doing the work she loves. Fabienne Kaminski, a qualified
interior designer, has been working at the Palace of Nations for two
and a half years, where her skills are expressed in shapes and colours.
Imposing drapes in the conference rooms or fabric wall coverings in
senior managers offices
expertise in renovating and maintaining
leather armchairs and sofas. To make the armchairs in the Delegates
Lounge attractive and comfortable, Fabienne patiently stripped them
all down before reupholstering them.
Fabienne is sometimes held to tight deadlines. But she is a very fast worker. Judge for yourself: in the space of 12 days last April, she gave a makeover to 550m2 of leather mural in Conference Room XI The work was done in seven stages, all by hand: sponging down, pigmentation, drying, fixing, drying, three coats of polish. A Herculean effort, but what a fabulous result, both to look at and to touch!
