A memorial

A few months ago, UN Special came up with the idea of building a memorial to honour the memory and the legacy of commitment and dedication of all our colleagues who have given their lives in the defence of the ideals of the Organization. Since then, UN Special has received many messages of encouragement and the project is taking shape.

Mr. Sergei Ordzhonikidze, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, has decided that a permanent memorial will soon stand in the grounds of Ariana Park, where we shall be able to pay tribute to those UN colleagues who made the ultimate sacrifice to serve the cause of peace.

It was agreed from the outset that the memorial should be an inter-agency project. UNOG itself is already raising funds for the project and the Heads of many Geneva-based UN agencies have pledged contributions. However, to be truly a token of our solidarity with our colleagues who have perished, it is important that we, as international civil servants, also participate. We are therefore launching an appeal to staff members throughout the Geneva-based UN system to contribute to the memorial.

I hope that you will give generously to this worthy cause, which unites us all.

I thank you in advance.
