WHO staff packed the main hall of the organization’s headquarters to greet their favourite former staff member none other than the Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr Kofi Annan.

The SG was in Geneva to attend a meeting at the ILO. He dropped in to WHO the organiza tion where he started his career 30 years ago and gave a short address of encouragement to staff in their international health work and their commitment to a safer and healthier world.

He was warmly received by Dr Brundtland, Director General, WHO and by Lahouari Belgharbi, President of the Staff Association who presented him with a modest gift on behalf of fond and loyal WHO staff. He recognised familiar faces in the crowd, shook a few hands and exchanged reminiscences before departing amidst rapturous applause for his next engagement.
