What is the picture by department and organization?
A detailed study of the responses broken down by department and organization would require more resources and time than are actually available. Furthermore, depending on the representativeness of the sample, the results would be more or less meaningful. In addition, some questionnaires came back without any mention of organization. Therefore, a detailed analysis may not be very significant. However, as the data are available, two indicators have been selected to give a very rough indication of what’s going on in individual departments or organizations. But even so, not too much should be read into them as their statistical significance is not always obvious.
These two indicators are:
- Do you feel that, within the present structures, your work contributes to the United Nations objectives?
- And taking into account your experience in the United Nations, would you still join the Organization today?
Remember, in response to question 21, 94% of all respondents believe that their work contributes at least to some extent to the UN objectives, while around 6% say that it does not at all. Similar computations were done for a number of individual departments and organizations. The chart below gives an overview of the results for those who say their work fully contributes to the objectives of the UN. The most positive ones are from ICTR, UNMIK, UNESCAP, UNICEF and UNECE.
Work fully contributes to UN objectives
(Percentage of total answers)
The graph below gives an overview of those who feel that their work does not contribute at all to UN objectives.
Staff from UNECA, UNESCWA and UNCTAD are the most pessimistic.
Work does not at all contribute to UN objectives
(Percentage of total answers)
Taking into consideration your experience in the United Nations would you still join the Organization today? NO
From the graph above it appears that the departments and organizations that colleagues are the least likely to want to join again are ICTY, UNCTAD, UNESCWA, ILO and UNECA. While the departments that they would be most eager to join again are ECLAC, UNMIK and ICTR.
